1996 fiestva 212 cuddy gas gauge inop

Having problem with fuel gauge when using the boat yesterday gauge want below E and never worked since check wires on tank ..
When i turn key off and in very little movement on fuel gauge
A
How do you test sending unit and gauge??
 
Also this has  been a problem for a while tach will jump around and sometimes work fine but at time will go past 6000 rpm at idle !!!

    To test the sender you will need to remove it from the fuel tank and operate it to see if the gauge moves. You can check the gauge by removing the pink wire from the sender and touch it to the ground wire on the sender With the key on this should move the gauge to full. If not the gauge may be faulty. You would need to access the gauge and check the connection on the back to make sure it is good and has power to it.

    The way I would test the gauge is to hook a test light to battery ground and the probe to the positive lead at the sender, watching the gauge at the same time. It should move if not peg. If so the sender is the issue (rusted off at the windings of the potentiometer or no contact thru the sender). If not the sender add test leads from the gauge to the sender to verify the wiring before replacing the gauge.
