knot for tying at a piling

Asked several times in another post but no one responded...if tying to a plying, is a clove hitch the way to go? Just looks so like it will not hold for long stays and bouncing around? Seems like you'd want to tie about 50 knots or something to make sure it will hold....

I always use a bowline.. it's dang simple and one handed when practiced, and is almost as solid an anchor knot as a figure eight, which can be tied with a fixed running end, but a pita to do so..
You may find a prusic (sp?) Handy at times, too.. it's a self sinching line to line knot that has a sweet purpose when tying off to a line ran between two pilons. I used it for climbing all the time, when I used to do that, but have found it a perfect knot for the purpose mentioned.
