When under stress engine start popping

EasybeeEasybee Member Posts: 21
2005 Rinker Fista Vee with two 350 mercury engines. Took the boat out on Monday. Leaving the slip, everything was fine. About four miles, bow engine started acting crazy making a intermittent popping sound. At first, I thought it was the carburetor and backfiring. If anyone experience this type of issue, what is it and how to resolve?

Sounds like lean pop could be your issue. Did this just start after a winter storage? When was the last time all fuel filters were changed? Ever had the carburetors cleaned?

Definitely sounds like you need new plugs.  I had this exact same thing happen to me once and buddy a couple times. Every time new plugs solved the issue.

I’ve had that happen and it was gone when I replaced the cap and rotor.

Given that it’s a 2005, I assume it is MPI and not carb. How old are the plugs/cap/rotor?

All above correct. Start with cap/rotor/plugs.
Sounds like the world is coming apart when it happens underway.

@Easybee - sounds like an odd Rinker with a bow engine! lololol.

I'm beating a dead horse here, but spark plug wires do lose conductivity with time and seem to be forgotten during preventive maintenance. Before spending another dollar or another minute of your time on this I would change plugs, wires, cap and rotor if they haven't been done very recently and be sure to use a marine grade cap & rotor. I'd also consider replacing fuel filters if not done recently.
