New boat, new journey

The long wait of getting back on the water is finally over…although, with how bad the weather has been in New England this spring and early summer, we don’t fell like I missed out on much.

After selling my 350 EC last September, it took us a while (and a few surveys) to find what we were looking for. I picked her up in Freeport, Long Island on Monday and made the 9 hour maiden voyage to my home port in Rhode Island.

She’s a 2002 Silverton 410 Sport Bridge. At 35,000 lbs, she is a load, but the CAT diesels pushed her effortlessly.

Even though I sold my Rinker, I still come to this forum every day. And like so many others who have stayed, I plan on remaining part of this family.

Now the fun begins…learning a new boat, crawling in every hole, and finding things that make you say wtf!

Captain Quinn could have gotten two "JAWS" on that yacht!  Please tell us more about those CATS!

Cruised 8 hours up the Atlantic at 2300 RPM at about 16 knots. Never touched the throttles. Just effortless. I was in awe, totally blown away by those babies. Burned about 30 gps roughly, I’ll know more when I spend $1K to fill her up and see how many gallons I actually burned on the trip.

That's amazing! Congrats!   She looks like a blast at the helm/anchor/slip!

Does she have the front and rear thrusters?  Looks like a tank to dock.

No thrusters. Have to do it the old fashion way!
It was definitely a concern when I was buying…when we did the sea trial, I spent time with the previous owner at the helm talking to him about docking and not having a thruster on a boat this size. He said, with the diesels, it wasn’t a big deal if you know what you’re doing.

So of course, I was going to find out when I brought her home. Upon arrival at my slip, I thought, well here we go, I’m going to find out how good I am lol…46’ loa, 14’ beam…

And actually I was pleasantly surprised. The CATS have huge props. They spin the boat effortlessly. The response is quick and amazing. Just a quick in and out of gear. The low end grunt is impressive. I backed into the slip no issues at all. Well the only real issue is that there isn’t much visibility from the fly bridge when backing in. I can see the corner on the starboard side swim platform, otherwise I’m blind. So need someone good on the platform when docking. Maybe one day I’ll get a Garmin backup camera.

I will try to get some pics next week. The fly bridge is huge. Seats 7 comfortably. Has an icemaker (soon to be a fridge) and a sink.

That is so awesome. If I had not ended up in the family situation I'm in a flybridge model would be at the marina. Right now I feel lucky to have our 270 which right now is getting no love- but I hope to be getting some use soon. Congratulations on may levels and I can't wait to see more pictures. A walk thru video would really be awesome if done right. I'm excited for you on this new adventure and welcome back to the forum. For this forum to survive it will have to accept more varied boat owners and I hope it always has a personal touch as most sites are pretty cold and generic.
    Congrats again!

Here’s my thread on the backup camera. For the price, it actually works really well. Looks like you can secure it to your vinyl with the magnet up by your stern light. Just find a piece of painted or powder coated steel to stick it to. The magnet is extremely strong. This is a good option to use till you figure out what camera system you want.

Thanks @aero3113. I did follow your thread closely because I knew a backup camera might be something I wanted in the future. Nice to see that worked out well.

I'm always curious to see the torque figures on the diesels, since it's really not apples-to-apples when using only HP figures compared to gassers...so my curiosity had to be satisfied.  I found several spec sheets, but this one showing the average torque is over 800 ft lbs between 2200-2800 rpm, and you have 500 ft lbs available at only 1400 rpm. Low-end grunt indeed!

A friend of mine has a similar boat as mine but he has gas and watching him dock he has to add throttle and I very rarely ever use throttle. I have bigger props than him as well since I have the torque to push them. Checked my chart and I make the most torque around 1500 rpm which is about 550 at idle it's 370

A few weeks ago my wife and I came back upriver against current at sunset and she wanted to enjoy it so I was at idle upriver doing 5-6 kts.

@johnny44 those engines seem huge for that boat and not in a bad way. It must really get up and go.
