Hey everyone, We just purchased a 2006 Rinker 390 and brought her back from Cleveland to Sandusky this past weekend. Overall the boat surveyed well and we are really excited about it, but like any older cruiser, I’ve already found a few gremlins to start working through.
The first issue I’m chasing is with the front & rear A/C unit. The system runs and cools, but the temperature reading on the control panel is way off from the actual cabin temperature. It seems like the unit cooler than it really is, which is making it hard to regulate properly.
Has anyone run into this before on a 390 or similar Rinker setup?
- Could this be a bad temp sensor?
- Thermostat calibration issue?
- Control panel problem?
- Sensor location issue?
I’m still learning the boat, so any advice, common fixes, or things to check first would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to learning from everyone and getting this boat dialed in!
I’ll probably have a few more questions as we get familiar with the boat.”

You can definitely change the calibration point. The exact button sequence depends on make and model ... download a user manual for yours and find the "programming mode" to change the temperature offset.
Beyond that, it might depend on where the temperature sensor is mounted. You'd have to trace the sensor cable -- a flat cable like an old-school phone cable. Maybe you can relocate the sensor so it's seeing return air and not affected by the cold air coming out from the AC unit.
Sorry for giving generic advice - others can give advice specific to your 390, but maybe this will get you started.

Thanks for the help. I was able to locate both temperature sensors, and both are clipped to their respective A/C units.
I moved the forward sensor more into the airflow, and that helped tremendously. I also repositioned the aft sensor, but it didn't make much difference. At this point, I suspect the aft sensor may not be reading correctly.
Thursday night into Friday morning, I was able to get the cabin temperature down to 70°F, which I confirmed with a separate thermometer. However, the aft cabin control was still reading 58°F, so there is clearly a significant discrepancy between the actual cabin temperature and what the system is reporting.
One additional observation on the aft A/C unit:
When I hold the temperature sensor in my hand, the displayed temperature rises and the A/C kicks on. As soon as I let go, the temperature quickly drops below 65°F and the A/C shuts back off.
When the unit is running, I'm measuring approximately 49°F air coming out of the vents, so the system appears to be cooling properly. It seems like the issue may be with the temperature sensor or the temperature reading rather than the A/C unit itself.
Has anyone seen a sensor fail in a way that causes it to read significantly colder than the actual cabin temperature?
Turn the unit off.
Press and hold MODE and DOWN for 3 seconds (unit enters programming mode)
Press UP until it says "09" (function 9 is temperature calibration)
Press MODE - it will display the current temperature
Press UP or DOWN until it displays the correct temperature
Press FAN to save and return to programming mode
Press FAN again to exit programming mode
