Gimbal bearing

I have a 242 with 5.7 EFI and B3 outdrive. What are the symptoms of the gimbal bearing going bad? I've got a slight grinding noise coming from the drive when it's trimmed up slightly or when I'm turning more than half lock either side. Only happens when in motion. Any help is greatly appreciated as usual! Love this forum!!!

Also if it is the gimbal bearing is it something that needs to be done urgently or could it wait until end of October when I plan on pulling the boat out for routine maintenance? Will prob only run about 3 - 5 hours in that time.

You will be fine to finish out the season. As for cost I'm not 100% sure. I had mine done last season but also had the bellows and shift cable done at the same time. The bearing itself is not that expensive.

Thanks Al. I had the bellows inspected when I had the boat surveyed prior to me buying it in May. They all looked good and looked pretty new. Could anything else cause it to go bad?

if the previous owner didn't lube it,that can cause it to go bad.

That sounds like the bearings. I had a Rinker 342 FV and the bearings got shot on the I/O's. Similar sound and kind of a slipping. You probably need to look at bellows and possible worn shafts that contributed to the problem. That is the problem I had on my old 342 FV and to fix all of that was about $6000 (however I was doing the repair on two engines). I would be surprised if you get away with just the bearings and nothing else. The labor is certainly more expensive and time consuming then the parts.

It's a pain but with proper maintenance you should never have to do it again. Good luck.

The bearing is around 50 bucks, bellows are around 80 bucks. Ujoints around 250 if rusty. Parts are cheap. Labor kills at 100 an hour. Maybe a 3 hour job.

Al- is that the zert on the outdrive to lube it? I'm getting some vibration also, not grinding and I did squirt some grease in there but to be honest, I was afraid of over filling it and blowing something out....what is the proper procedure to lube it?

Al, when you start pumping the grease in there, how do you know when to stop? I don't want to blow out a seal...

but, if you have no service history, for all I know it's "empty", how would I know it is full? I started another thread on this question...

Is it worth me trying to put a few shots of grease in mine first or is it to late if it's starting to make a growling noise already? Also how many hours labour should I be charged to change the bearing if that's what's needed?!

I have one's that are sealed and don't require additional (nor can you add) grease.
