Before I go ahead and buy this starter can someone verify this is the correct part number for my 2001 Mercruiser 5.7. I'm 99% sure it is just want a second opinion. Also please let me know if there is a better brand that I should be looking at. Thanks!

Thanks MT, that's plan. I'm going through all the wiring I can get to in The engine compartment. I also just purchased a new trim pump bracket (mine is corroded pretty bad) that's pre wired with all new solenoids.

YSMB, I did see starters a lot cheaper than what I posted. I know the Sierra brand and not sure of the quality of the other ones. Thanks for the link.

I was able to install the new trim pump bracket with solenoids today, it was pretty straight forward. I'm glad I did this because not only the bracket was corroded but most of the terminals were also. I'm going to keep the old solenoids as spares to get me out of a jam if needed. I think the starter solenoid is the same as these. Just waiting on the starter and bottom paint and I should be good to go!

Yea, I saw the stainless one but went with this instead. It took 15 years for it to get like this,we only plan on keeping this boat for another year or two.

Yes. How much was the regular bracket. I paid 99 just for the bracket, no solenoids.

Mine was 12 years old and wasn't as bad as the picture. I think when it rains it leaks water on the top shelf. My new fireboy has slight rust now

@aero3113, throw two or three stacked stainless washers under the bracket to keep it up so water doesn't collect and start to rust it again. I did that with mine on my 232.

I received the starter today and after about 15 minutes of me hanging upside down it was installed! The only issue I have now is that the positive post isn't long enough with the inner nut on. Anyone see an issue if I remove this nut? The new terminal end that I installed is thicker than original and with the fuse and one other wire installed there isn't enough room to install the lock washer.

The inner nut stops the pole from being yanked out of the (it looks like a solenoid) I would find a thinner nut or in the past I have put an nut on a grinding wheel (wear glasses please) using vice grips to reduce its thickness. The outer nut will tighten against the inner nut making a very strong lock that does NOT put stress on the pole itself.

Aero star lock is a way better idea. I wouldn't remove that inner nut. It is locking that bolt so it doesn't twist off. I'd also consider changing your terminal end to fit.

I repeat, I would not remove that inner nut. Grind it down or extend the thread but don't remove that inner nut I believe it stabilizes the contact pole.

I did a combination of both,I ground down the nut and used a star washer. Now everything fits nice and snug! There's even 3 or 4 threads showing once the outer nut was tightened down.

@aero3113 nice stuff, I used to use di-electric grease made by Ford/Motorcraft. back in the day that stuff was awesome for enhancing conductivity and repelling corrosion! It even made spark plug boots come off easy without damaging the wires. Used it on my 302s LOL All good!
