226 captiva only starts a few times, then won't crank

I have a 2007 rinker 226 captiva with 5.7 volvo penta gi motor. Recently it has been having a problem where it will only start a couple of times, and then after a few starts it won't crank. After charging the batteries (two batteries) it will start another couple times. Do I have a bad alternator, or maybe bad batteries? I'd have a hard time believing that both the batteries went bad at the same time. Thanks for the help

I would start with the batteries. If they are connected together, the dead one can drag down a good one. Check the specs on the batteries. Merc requires 1000MCA for their engines. I am not sure about Volvo, but it should be close to the same.

Cableguy Greg, I will try what you said to do, but I will add that I ran an alternator test with my battery charger and it failed when connected to either battery.
