Sub

I am considering adding a sub to my 280EC. I found a spot under the starboard rear seat/cupholder area of the boat. I am looking at doing an 8" to give me that extra thump that the current speakers do not produce. I am going to center the sub top to bottom in case I want to upgrade via 2 inchitus to a 10" sub in the future. The question I have for everyone is which brand sub? As far as marine or wet rated, there aren't too many options. Wetsounds, JL Audio are a couple that come to mind. I am not looking to break the bank, but I don't want to be cheap and have something that sounds like crap. Thoughts?

I wasn't looking for knock your socks off bass. Been there, done that. I ended up replacing my two channel factory Clarion amp with a new five channel Clarion XC2510 amp and an 8" JLAudio marine sub. It is exactly what I was looking for. With the sub located in the rear corner under the seat, I get the corner effect from the sub with some added thump. Overall I am happy with how it turned out.

dont bother with 8" they dont move enough air to provide enough bass in a free air environment. Stick with 10"

make sure you get free air subs , and run proper 10 gauge wire to them, and have a big enough amp to power them correctly.

    I would put in 2x 10"  MIN

I am planning on using a free air sub. Unfortunately I do not have room for 2 10" subs.

8s just wont create bass... think of them as mid subs. and in an open top environment they just cant move enough air.

can you fit a single 12" in?

As a audio dealer I can agree with the aformentioned post.  Out on the open water, you really need to go with a minimum of 10" for any decent performance.   Each of the brands you mentioned all have decent marine grade free air subs.

I still like the amp. I am running the 4 cockpit speakers and the sub off the amp. I had to do some splits since my M455A only has one output to the rear. If/when I upgrade the head unit, I will get one with a dedicated sub output.
