The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a towing capacity of 1500 lbs. Looks like the boat was a Bayliner Bowrider -- which the smallest version has a trailer weight of approximately 1700 lbs empty.

Math adds up to accident waiting to happen...and it did. Glad he was alright. Hopefully lesson learned.
