2003 312 starter just spinning

The starter is constantly spinning regardless of key position.   The only way to stop is to turn the batteries off.     I’m guessing problem is with the starter/solenoid.    Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or could advise me before I tie myself in a knot and attempt to get the starter out without removing the engine that has been out twice in the last month.    I knew I should have just changed it out.    Such is my luck!

Check your ignition switch to make sure wires or switch itself is not shorted out.
from there you can trace to figure out what failed.

But it's not engaging the starter....would that not point to something in the starter?

There is also a relay on top of the motor, behind the intake that needs to be checked for continuity

I am not a mechanic but thats what I was thinking, if “spinning” it’s not suggesting “cranking” so doesn’t that mean it’s being power up but not throwing the mechanicals that engage the flywheel to turn the engine over?

I was thinking Bendix but not that smart to be sure enough to say that! Even looke din the annual to see if it was called that too.

Well if it’s constantly spinning and not turning over i would say constant load broke the bendix 

if it’s actually turning over it could be switch,
relay or starter itself shorted

Give the starter a couple of hits with a hammer. If it stops, then you know its the starter is giving you issues. You can do the same with the relays also (could be stuck).
