Can I get some opinions on the level of scoring on the pump shown in the pic? Do you think it needs replacing? My water pressure is low once the engine reaches operating temperature. Thank you.
I found when we first got ours it does not take much of that for the pump to lose its pull....it's done when the temps start riding. I bought a kit that included a shim for the pump body along with an impeller that is about 1/16 shorter vs spending 700 to a grand for a new pump. You can't be far off from a problem unfortunately.
does not do any good just to have a new impeller....I think I had posted pictures of my pump and never would have thought the scouring I had would be enough to be a problem and fought it for some time. I would not spend 800 bucks for the Hardin pump everyone so highly recommends...I'm sure it is a great pump. The inserts for the Merc pump are also stainless...I'm guess probably a better grade than what they can use to cast the pump body and it has scouring on it....just sayin...
This winter I need to do both of my water pumps. 3 years ago there was some light scouring so I would guess that they now look like the pics above. At this point I plan to go with the plate kits that @rasbury has had such success with. $110 per motor vs $520 per motor just keeps making a lot of sense to me. Will keep reading and investigating as this is a winter 2020 project, but those kits look just lovely.
Be sure to keep the manufacturer name for your records. The new impeller is shorter than the standard one to compensate for the thickness of the shims. When you replace the impeller in the future you will need to know the part number they used to get the correct one.
I was looking at going with this kit for both of mine this winter. Comes with inner and outer plates. I emailed in and asked them about the narrower impeller and they responded that the inner plate is only .015" thick so a standard OEM impeller is all that is needed, it just compresses slightly.
