Oil Leak

Found an unsual amount of Motor oil in the bilge. Starboard engine needed a quart of oil (but hadn't check oil in several weekends). Where too look for a "common" leak or trouble shoot on the engine?  No alarms sounded, oil pressure normal etc.

Check the bottom of your oil pan. There’s a chance of some corrosion that caused the pan to leak, could also be the rear main seal. Check around the oil filter also, make sure it’s snug.

Thanks, when I noticed the oil in the bilge I checked the oil filter first. should there be oil everywhere if the rear main seal or not.

Is it everywhere from sloshing around with water in the bilge? Could possibly be a loose valve cover also. Check you PCV valve, if it’s plugged up it could be causing pressure build up.

If it’s the rear main oil would be dripping at the rear of the oil pan.

It was just in the bilge. Nowhere else.

Also check remote oil filter lines and oil pressure sensor which screws into the block

Has anyone had experience with using a "stop leak" solution for a temporary fix?

Bar's claims they have a rear main seal solution. As everyone knows at this time of the year all mechanics are backed up for weeks.

Did you verify it's the rear main seal?

No, but it seems to be coming from the rear of the bilge. Its not spraying or losing very fast at all.

Use an inspection mirror and check the bottom of your oil pan for corrosion. The only reason I’m pushing this is because it happened to me.

The steel oil pans were prone to rusting sitting above water in the bildge. There are replacment aluminum ones available, but will require removal of the engine, which is a great time to clean the bildge. check the wiring, and replace the bildge pump.

The remote folter mounts in that area also follow the lines down from the filter. Maybe you can lay something under the motor to a better location of the leak. Im not fond stop leak products

My brother in laws port side leaked oil like that and it turned out to the the remote oil line.
it gave out right at the elbow on the back
side of the motor

had my remote oil filter line leak a considerable amount of oil last year, it came and went and was hard to troubleshoot. my phone camera and inspection camera solved to mystery and showed oil on the metal bend on the oil line below the motor.
