Dock mate of mine had the double or triple version and hit something on his way back to the dock. Needless to say, we had to pull his boat around midnight that night because the light broke off and the boat was taking on water. She wouldn’t have lasted the night if he would have left her in.

I considered these and did a ton of online research and just couldn’t find a compelling reason to buy. There are stories like Greg’s and most say they are just not bright enough.

I have two friends that had leaks with theirs, and decided to never even consider that option.  
I went with lots of LED lighting mounted underneath my swim platform.  It's not quite as bright as the transom mounted style, but there is ZERO chance for a leak from the setup!

I was thinking of adding some under the platform for effect I know it not the same as the underwater ones bout for anchoring or at dock might be just enough mu platform is pretty high out of the water

Ocean LED lights are some of the better ones that I found, when researching.  I still didn't go that route, because of drilling holes into the transom. (can you see a pattern? haha)   
Those are BRIGHT.  And pricey.

If you can stomach the price - I had Ocean LED X4's midnight blue on our 276. Worked extremely well. Crazy bright. Thru hull is zero problem if done by a competent person.

What do you guys think? 8000 lumens and easy install. I don’t want to drill into the transom and I know it won’t throw a ton of light on the port and starboard sides. Basically just light between the drives. I figure since I have a swim light switch and pre wired, maybe I should use it. It should be up and not below the hull so shouldn’t have to worry about it hitting something. Do you think it would shine past the swim platform? 8000 lumens (100 individuals LED’s) is a lot. 2 links below.

Thanks @javhav those are surface mount. I’m trying to stay away from drilling holes, wanted to stick with the drain plug.

Has anyone tried the trim tab mounted ones from Perko or try to make mounts for surface mount lights onto the tabs? They would only work when anchored or at the dock though.  But at least you can run the wires through above the water line

@Pat310 , I didn’t know those existed, very cool. They would really light up your wake if you turned them on while on plane, LoL.

I’m surprised they’re only 75 lumens? I don’t think they will light up much. Blue is only 27 lumens!

@mattie your right how crazy BRIGHT ( and pricey) OceanLED are. I do think the prices will be coming down in the coming months.

I’d agree the tab lights look cheesy on a center console, but on a cruiser I don’t think it would be a problem if they are under a platform. 

Bry are those surface mount or are they all the way through? I’ve got 4 that are round pucks all the way through.

@Liberty44140 , they are very low profile surface mount,  only a small hole all the way through for wire feed.

I was considering the drain plug lights for my jet boat but was a bit nervous on how far this very bright model protruded away from the transom

Interesting. I would not use a drain plug light on on my 390 but I would consider that for the jet boat if I were going to use it at night. Seems like a good option for a boat that’s kept on a trailer. Too risky for dock.

@bry1429 I’ve been doing some research and it looks like that company makes a good product, and they stand by it. I saw a video on YouTube earlier of them taking an aluminum baseball bat to their “Vega” light. Hitting it as hard as they can multiple times. Minimal dents to the housing, no damage to the resin lens and it powered right up when he put power to it.

I agree for trailer use may be safer. I do love the brightness of that model.
 I pull my jet boat up on an ezdock, I fear pulling on and off may hit the protruding lights. The dual drain plugs on my scarab are 1" off the hull bottom. I'm a worrier by nature 😬
