Through Hull Ball Valve

I went to cycle the through hull valve for the generator and the shaft the handle is on broke off! I would rather it break now then in the water when needed. Why did Rinker use a valve with the triangle flange? Is there any reason why I can’t replace it with one without the triangle on it? Also, the 1 on the valve, I’m assuming that it’s a 1 inch valve?

I believe they must be bronze, not brass, but regardless, that looks like kind of a crappy factory install.

Brass is a big no-no on thru hulls. Pay to get the right kind for marine use.  

The triangle flange is used to fasten to the hull, which yours is not. Do not really need the flange.

@Alswagg , I was able to finds the valve without the flange for about $12 cheaper than with the flange. Yes, cycling the valves periodically will be on my to do list throughout the boating season.

I dont know why you just dont use tephlon tape. Its just water and regular plumbing connections.

The valve I removed was installed with sealant, so was the elbow. I’m guessing this was done at the factory?

are you talking how it is sealed to the hull? I re did mine but don't recall which grade I used....but not the permanent one for sure!

@rasbury no , I didn’t have to remove the through hull fitting, just the valve. This is sealant for the threads that go into the through hull fitting.

Did you attach the grounding wire from the old fitting to the new one?

Yes, the grounding wire is attached. If you look in the second pic, there’s a screw for the grounding wire to attach.

It’s a good thing, don’t want to miss anything important. In my professional career (Aircraft Maintenance Manager) having someone look over your work is a must, no second chances in aviation.
