Interesting tid bit of info below. I have sold my fishing boat, not wanting to spend 35-40 k to buy a new one. Been doing a search to find a lightly used up to 10 year old aluminum fishing boat. I ran across this valuable information. You never know when your are going to need all this data. The State with most boat registrations. My state did not make the top 20, how  is your's?

State Rankings

The top 20 states for registered boats recorded almost 75 percent of the total amount in the entire country, accounting for 9.7 million boats. The top ten states for boat registrations account for 52 percent of registered boats at 6.8 million.

After years on top, Michigan concedes its title as the number one boating state in the country to California, whose residents registered 1,051,606 recreational boats in 2002. Michigan is the second largest state, with a little more than 1,000,000 boats registered. Mississippi rounds out the top 20, falling from 16 th place, with 100,000 fewer boats registered in 2002.

Other changes in the top 20 rankings:

  • Wisconsin claims the number five spot from Texas, which moves down to number six.
  • Illinois is now ranked ninth; South Carolina falls to number ten.
  • Louisiana jumps two places to number 13, bumping Missouri and Georgia to 14 th and 15 th, respectively.
  • Tennessee and Virginia move up to ranks 18 and 19, respectively.

Here’s a quick look at the top 20 states and the total number of boats registered in each:

  • 1. California 1,051,606
  • 2. Michigan 1,000,337
  • 3. Florida 922,597
  • 4. Minnesota 834,974
  • 5. Wisconsin 650,280
  • 6. Texas 624,390
  • 7. New York 529,732
  • 8. Ohio 413,276

Never been to Michigan but I can see why the large number of boat owners. Lake Michigan, Huron, Erie, St Clair, I understand that there are a lot of smaller but boat able glacier made lake's in the interior. Have heard they are great for fishing. It's a peninsula, like Florida.  There approximately 10 million in that state. so one in 10 have a boat. Right On!   MI.

We have a LOT of coastline.  But things have been trending down:

Macomb County had 48,943 registered boaters. Oakland County, home to hundreds of navigable inland lakes, remains the leader in the number of registered boats at 83,039, followed by Wayne County at 55,630. Since 2008, the number of registered boats in Macomb County has fallen by 10.94 percent from 54,956.

Lake St. Clair touches both Macomb and Wayne as well as St. Clair county. But boaters from all 3 plus a couple other counties are on the lake.  That's just the metro Detroit area.

Alright @mattie you peeked my curiosity. I Had to look it up. You are correct.

Canadians own about 8.6 million boats.

In 2017, the Canadian recreational marine industry generated $2.3 billion. The average cost of units sold was $50,000, down 6.8% from 2016. Large powerboats and sailboats generate about 40% of total sales. Speedboats now account for 25% of the Canadian market.

Total boat sales declined by 2.5%, but number of units sold increased 4.7% to 39,000. Outboard-powered boat sales increased 4.3%. Small aluminum fishing boat sales increased 4.8%, with an average selling price of $19,000. These boats have 78.7% of the outboard engine market. Aluminum pontoon boats continue to grow in popularity, increasing 8.9%. PWC sales increased a whopping 12.8%. Inboard wakeboard boat sales increased 2.3%, for a total of $255 million, and now occupying 12.75% of the entire boat market.

Engine sales were 20% higher compared to 2010 - 40,826 engines sold for a total of $321 million. Engines sold are also getting more powerful. Average power in 2010 was 46 hp, but by 2017, engines averaged 58 hp, with median power of 100 hp, and an average value of $7800.

@Glassguy54 Google, what state do you live in? it's easy

Boats are made in America: 95 percent of powerboats sold in the U.S. are made in the U.S. There were an estimated 12 million registered boats in the U.S. in 2017. 95% of boats on the water (powerboats, personal watercraft, and sailboats) in the U.S. are small, towable boats under 26 ft

    Fort Lauderdale
Greater Fort Lauderdale has been called the Venice of America (more than 300 miles of inland waterways) and the Yachting Capital of the World (more than 40,000 yachts call it home). The annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is one of the largest events of its kind in the world.

The U.S. recreational boating industry is now in its eighth consecutive year of growth.

Our data shows unit sales of new powerboats in the U.S. reached 276,000 in 2018.

I like the one that says 95% of US boats are small boats.  We power cruisers tend to think of ourselves as the big dogs of boating.  We are the insignificant tip of the iceberg.

@LaRea, Yes, you power cruisers are SO much richer than the rest of us peons! :)
