Just a terrible way to go. I'm sure they'll investigate the cause. We had a fire on our dock a few years back that took out 4 boats (mine was next in line) caused by a candle on board.
The accident report is out. The boats in this accident were not "boats" as we use the word. They were basically derelict vessels with people living on them. If there had been a boat with working engines, some of those victims might have escaped with their lives.
The boat that started the fire sat in her slip without moving for at least a decade until she was repossessed and sold to somebody with no boating experience. The heating system used by that person consisted of a portable electric heater and an electric blanket. Not surprisingly, the fire started in the electrical panel.
Meanwhile, the marina made every possible mistake in terms of readiness.
"The seven occupants who remained in the cabin of the
vessel—five children, their mother, and another woman—became trapped by the flames and
perished in the fire."
