Waste Tank Carbon filter

I’m surprised at how much money they want for a new inline carbon filter. Has anyone cut one open, glued new PVC fittings on so it will screw apart, then be able to open refill with new carbon when needed?

I switched to Big Orange refillable a while ago.  It costs about $12-$20 to refill it with charcoal from the pet store made for aquariums.

I made my own, $19 from the pet store for a box with 2 seasons worth of filter charcoal.

I found this one a little long. Hard to fit in the space I had so am building a new one with a shorter piece of larger pipe for this season.

I sized mine to lay on top of the tank and secured with a zip tie. Out of the way in an unused space.

Hey RBO's - Big Orange even has a Rinker on their web page!
    https://bigorangefilter.com/

I did the Big Orange filter. One thing I really like about it is the bypass vent. That thing howls at pumpout time.

Absolutely should have a vent. That's what the brass looking thing on mine is. Additionally, when I changed my waste tank last year I bought a Dometic/Sealand model with built in vent too.

@mattie - Big orange was developed by a Rinker owner.  I remember when he started that business up right on the RBO forum.

I am also one that has always used my own homemade filter.  Really cheap, really easy, and works great.

Anyone got a coupon code for a big orange? Love that it’s a Canadian company.

Think coupons are rare. Got some offer at a boat show few yrs back. Never used it.

I got free shipping last spring.....bout it. Very happy with product nonetheless.

    great service & packaging.

I cut open my filter. I was surprised, the carbon didn’t smell at all. Tomorrow I’ll get an end cap with a screw on cap and install the threaded union into it.

Good work! Walmart aquarium carbon for around $8, you only need one of them, then I used scotch pads 2ply at each end as media, you can use the old media as a template, nice to have it all replaced and fresh

Get a pair of the admirals old stockings/hose and fill a leg with the charcoal and put in the tube. Keeps the mess down a bit.

Nice!!! I went with the $15 Home Depot version, that is a much safer bet (no pun intended)

Aero, I have that tank saver as well.  I've seen my tank still get sucked in a little even with the tank saver, so I always take it a bit easy with those quick pumpouts! :)

I figured with the carbon filter the vent valve is needed even more. I’m surprised one wasn’t already installed.

Looks good. U.S. uses a lot of PVC for plumbing. Up here in Canuckistan it's all black ABS. PVC only allowed for outside of building.

I put the filter back in today, looks like original! I also installed the vent valve. When I drilled I was using a socket adapter on the hole saw and wasn’t thinking. When the hole saw went through it dropped right in the tank! Wasn’t fun getting out. Since I had access to the tank sensors, I cleaned the surfaces so they will read correctly. In spring, I will give the whole tank a good cleaning. Sorry for the graphic pics!

As you can see, it looks like the previous owner didn’t clean the tank at all. In spring, I plan on using tank buster to clean it out. I’ve read if needed use a double dose and it works really well.

I can't see my tank because of the build on the 342. When a had my 270 I pumped out on flushed it out all the time seem to help keep it clean enough and continue to do this on my 342. May give that stuff a try in the spring.
