Bravo 3 Rear Prop Nut

In the boating videos link I started watching and the first one I checked out was this:

I'm pretty sure I remember taking the props off my 2000 FV270 the first winter to clean them up and store them and I don't recall that big s$$ nut and I know I don't have that special tool.  Pretty sure I just used a big adjustable wrench. Was that in later models?

When I took mine off last year to put on a different one for a prop anode kit all I used was a deep socket the mechanic had if I recall.

I want to remove my Bravo 3 props to clean them up and grease the shaft. I was thinking about using an air powered die grinder with Scotchbrite pads. What do you use to get your props looking nice again?

Whatever you do, do not scratch them. I just give them a quick spray of muriatic acid and rinse. No sense in shining them, as soon as they're in the water any length of time the shine is gone.

I borrowed my dads pipe wrench to remove the big nut on my bravo 3s, worked like a champ. I could get them with large channel locks but it wasn’t enough torque to get them back on tight, pipe wrench worked perfect. Here it is:

The Works toilet bowl cleaner. Pour on, rinse off. Zero effort. 

NEVER use steel wool or a steel bristle brush: you will cause corrosion.

So, I'm not crazy? Later years had that big nut? I'm sure mine didn't.

Mine was an 06 and the big nut holding the forward prop on was around 2 1/2” OD. But I also had an 01 B3 years ago and I’m pretty sure it was just as big, but I don’t remember as clearly. The small nut holding the aft prop on is smaller, was always able to get that with a large crescent wrench.

Yeah, but that's what I'm saying, I used a 1 7/16" socket for the outside nut, but for the inside nut I didn't use the huge tool shown in the first pic. If anything I would have used a large adjustable wrench as it's the widest gap tool I own. I could be wrong (it was two years ago) but I don't recall it being that size. What is the approx size of that thing? Over 2 inches?

Thanks @aero3113. I'll check my wrench, it might go that big. Sure don't think so though. I'm going to go to the parts sites and see if there's any difference in previous years. Another thought just occurred to me, it is possible that during the first winter when my mechanic rebuilt my drive he removed them and I just took them home to clean them up and then returned them and he reinstalled them. I thought I remembered removing them myself to grease the splines, but could be wrong. Old age ya know!

I would think you would know it’s missing if it wasn’t installed. The nut nests into the prop, you would have a ton of play.

I would get the Merc tool off eBay so you can tourque properly....just sayin

60# tork on big nut and 100# on smaller nut

I use to take mine off every year and grease spline, So I purchased one same as cable and areo. The small one I had in the tool box.
