The windlass usually only cares what chain and rode you're using, every windlass I've seen the anchor rests on the bow roller.
As for the anchor the weight will vary based on the style anchor you need and the style anchor you need is based on where you boat. As important as proper weight is ( i always go one size above recommended weight) having proper legnth of chain and setting properly with correct scope is key to success no matter the bottom or anchor choice.
Grass, mud, sand, rock and coral all have their own best anchor.
I have good luck with my danforth resetting itself, plows usually need to be reset manually with a wind or current change. Im in mud with some sand. If i was in sand or grass id use a plow
Welcome @Dave250. Do you plan on doing a lot of overnight anchoring? If so, upsize the anchor and get a good length of heavy chain as @PickleRick suggests. The chain can be as important as the anchor when it comes to holding power.
Thanks for the replies .The boat currently has a 13 pd Danforth and holds well it seems to have hit the bow And chipped the gelcoat from previous owner just wasn’t sure if there was an anchor that wouldn’t have this issue
Maybe the previous owner was running with the anchor hanging a bit? The pulpit roller should hold the anchor and rode our far enough to not hit the bow.
Is there a pulpit extension with roller mounted on the boat? Anchor shouldn't be able to hit like that unless running with anchor hanging down. I'd also suspect hitting in a dock or bow is loose while trailering.
Ahh. Ok. That does look too long. No wonder it might hit. Sorry, can't suggest what anchor to use, but obviously with shorter hooks than yours. Anyone?
Hear are a couple of pics of my 2001 242 when I first was looking at it to buy (pretty much the same hull). Looks like there could be a 6 to 8 inch gap?
@Dave250 , is it possible your missing the roller? This would make your anchor sit much lower and further aft on the pulpit. If you look at my first pic, you can vision what it would look like if the roller wasn’t there. It looks like it would put it in the same spot as yours.
We have a 25' Crownline and use a 13lb fluke style anchor. Planning on changing to a Delta plow type but ours holds us just fine on the Ohio river with 15' of chain. We typically anchor in about 20' of water and I put out about 60' of rope and the 15' of chain.
Speaking of, looking to install i windlass next season but need new anchor line now so was going to buy what I will need for the Lewmar V700. I was going to buy about 150' of rope with about 15' of chain but been told I should have at least as much chain as the length of the boat?
Has anyone bought the stainless anchors off of eBay? Very reasonable, just curious about the quality. There are a few sellers, this one is from Texas, I’ve also seen them from New Jersey.
There is a new generation of anchors out there now. Rocna, Mantus, Manson, etc.
Our 2014 Four Winns came with a spectacular Blue Star stainless plow. Like jewellery on the bow. But it was junk, laid on its side. It would bite about 1 in 4 times. I was ready to snap!
Do your research, I went with Mantus. Literally perfect function. Didn’t buck up for the stainless version, cause I wanted to be sure it would work well first.
ohh, & get an anchor swivel if you have a windlass.
(the galvanized Lewmar Delta on our 276 worked very well btw)
