Correct Dip Stick Part Number

aero3113aero3113 Member Posts: 9,043 ✭✭✭✭✭
I ran my engines today. When I shut them down I let them sit and then checked the oil. They haven’t run since I did the oil change in the fall and wanted to make sure the oil level was good. I noticed that the starboard dipstick seemed a little longer than the port side. Sure enough I lined them up together and it is longer! Which one is the correct dipstick!?? The port side part number is 8M2021557 and on the starboard side all I could find was a -9 on it.

Port: 8M2021557

Starboard: -9

Port side oil read at the halfway point and starboard was reading full. I’m pretty sure that in the spring I put the same amount of oil in each engine.

I sent a text to my cousin, he has the same engine in his 04 24 SR. He checked and said his dipstick has a -9 on it. So I guess the longer one is correct? But what’s the PN just a -9 ?

Would make sense that the port side was only showing at the halfway mark.

If anyone else can verify with the same engine I would appreciate it.

I need to do more research but I believe this is the correct part number for the longer dip stick (the -9).

I think the port side has a dipstick for an 8 quart pan rather then a 5 quart.

Aero have you used marineengine.com to find the right part numbers for your engine? You need your engine serial number and then it gives you the right number for your parts from the drawings

I’m assuming that an 8 quart oil pan would be installed on a bigger engine and not installed on my 5.7?

Are your engine serial numbers close? Mine are 4 digits off.

Now I’m really confused?? I took the port dipstick and put it in the starboard side, it hardly reads on the stick. I put the starboard dipstick in the port side and it shows way over full. You can barely see in the picture but the oil is up to the “E” in Range! Any ideas????

Glad marine engine worked! I don’t have an answer on the latest issue. My 350s had 4.5 qt pans but the boats a few years older had 5.7s which had 5.5qt pans for a long time. The POs mechanic just assumed all 5.7/350 were 5.5qt and way over filled it which I quickly learned when I changed the oil the first time. From there I filled to the dipstick, not capacity. So it sounds like whoever changed the oil for you did the same...

I will check my dipsticks when I get on the boat - so maybe July at this rate?!

@Liberty44140 I changed the oil myself, I can’t remember if I just filled it or used the dipstick. I want to say I used the dipstick but could be wrong. I do remember when I sucked it out the port side seemed like it had less oil in it.

    I’m 1A030104 and 108

I wonder if the sequencing is different for horizon and thus the big difference in our serial numbers despite same build year?

Do you know how to decode the HIN?

@YYZRC I don’t know how to read the serial numbers. I use this pump, it works well but might upgrade to a high quality one in the future. I modified a washing machine hose so I can screw it onto the dipstick tube.

You fellas are probably taking about engine codes...

Here are the hull code deciphers - Some HINs have a country code before the HIN #

    Example HIN – ABC12345B212

ABC – Manufacturer Identification Code (MIC)

    12345 – Manufacturer’s Serial Number

B2 – Manufacture date where the first digit represents the month and the second digit represent the last digit of the year.

    A=Jan, B=Feb, C=Mar, D=Apr, E=May, F=Jun, G=Jul, H=Aug, I-Sep, J=Oct, K=Nov, L=Dec

12 – Last 2 digits of the model year

up just -9 on the stick. My motors always read just over full with 4 1/2 quarts like between the O and the K. Never could understand run a motor under heavy load at 4000rpm and oil cooler pan should be more like 6qt.

Thanks @reneechris14 , that’s pretty much where my -9 stick reads on my starboard engine. I’m probably going to have to fill the port engine to the correct full mark on the 8M2021557 stick. Maybe the tubes are different length, I don’t know.

Hey aero what’s the history of your boat? You’ve been doing lots of repairs - which is cool that you document for us....

how the heck does a motor end up with the wrong dipstick. That’s weird.

This stick is from my 270 years ago replaced it and had the same reading. No my 342 is the same. Don't remember the part #

Both boats had horizons the dip stick comes up right against the alternator had to get the garden hose thingy on it for the oil change.

Funny thing is, my 242 had the wrong dipstick also. It was too short, when I first got it I changed the oil and filled to the full mark. Went out and every so often the oil pressure would bounce and RPM’s would rev high. The crank was aerating the oil because it was too high. My 330 was owned by someone that had his mechanic do plugs, oil and filters and routine maintenance every season but didn’t pay much attention to anything else or details.

@mattie , I knew my 242 like the back of my hand. I want to feel the same way with my 330, it only made sense to me to go through everything.
