I tried acetone, that was suggested on various searches on the web.  Zero effectiveness.  Any other recommendations?

  I guess it depends what is on it.  If it is the nasty tar stuff you get from certain pilings, use MEK.  Also depends on which part you are talking about, if it's the white part, use a magic eraser.

I have buffed out some marks as I’m doing the rest. Just don’t touch the chrome part.
