Verizon subscriber probably at home since it's 9pm and doesn't get a great signal, iPhone user and has an alarm set for the morning so he probably has a job and doesn't sleep in. π1997 Bayliner 3988 -

rasbury Member Posts: 8,433 βββββSo I got an interesting idea from someone on iboats...leave the cable attached to the out drive, disconect from the sift plate...pull the cable out, install the bellows and pull the cable back through...don't even pull the drive. I'm puzzled this bellows failed so quickly...

Its doable on the alpha 1.Β Looks like an hour or two job.Β Getting the clamped surfaces cleaned will be the biggest challenge.Β Β
Id tape a fishing string or wire to the end of the cable before pulling it out.Β This will allow you to start it back from outside the boat then easily pull it the rest of the way back in from inside. Having a buddy on the other side to ensure she doesn't kink will come in handy. -
rasbury Member Posts: 8,433 βββββThe exhaust bellows is off- when I pulled the motor and did all the re work of the transom asy , this stupid bellows was the worst part. It almost seemed that the nub on the transom side was tapered- when you tighten the clamp it just walked off the nub. I tried the adhesive applied and let it sit for an hour, a few hours and over night. It just kept coming off. I think I mentioned above what finally seemed to get it to stick was the solvent I used to clean off the adhesive made it very tacky and it stayed on. Maybe the solvent broke down the rubber? Merc cable and Sierra boot did not fit as it was very tight and really stretched on the boot also- no clip on the end for around the cable.
So, I ordered a Merc kit which is the bellows, clamp(looks normal to me) and the clip for the tension around the cable. Just got it and for some reason they sent me two, hope that was not a message.
With the exhaust bellows off and the drive kicked to Port I should be able to get to everything and yes the pull back cord is the mission. If anyone else tries this, make sure you get the heat shield material off the cable by the y pipe as I know for sure, it will not pull through and add many hours trying to figure that one out!
