Backfire

My 2001 232CC has been backfiring around 3500 RPM. Only once in a while. Idle and wide open no problem. It runs perfectly other than that. What's your thoughts?

Spark plugs and/or wires.

Water in the fuel filter.

Not sure what you've done for preventative maintenance but I would start with all that stuff.

I changed both rotors and dist caps, got better but still there. New plugs and wires problem gone. A few months earlier I changed both fuel filters and the screen under the filters.

Check your ignition wires aren't crossed, and if they are they cross perpendicular...
