I replaced my barrel bolt with a new one years ago. The replacement wasn't exactly the same, but it is a Perko and it works. I did a JB Weld Redneck Repair on the old one and keep it as an emergency backup.
I almost broke it again yesterday! Luckily I only lifted the hatch maybe 3 inches to peek in and closed it. When I went to get off the boat, that’s when I noticed the bolt latch was bent! Hopefully I can bend it back without breaking it!! 🙄
Someone needs to rig up one of those pontoon-boat style transom door systems where you lift the door to swing it. Then there would be no need for the bolt.
Now if we can just find Jeff his metal piece around the insert. 😁
I don't understand how the metal part is the only thing that was lost on the trailer ride down from CT to FL... it makes no sense. I was looking at it earlier today.. honestly i just stopped using the door at all....anyway, earlier today was thinking "okay, lets try a 3d printed part" - will try to figure that out in the next week or two, can't be too hard, just will have to make it out of ABS or something that can handle the use.
I wasn’t going to mention this but since @aero3113 brought up magnets.... my door is held open with a strong magnet and the engine room hatch will not activate unless the door is magneted open. No magnet, no hatch open....
Thanks. On my 342 I pretty much kept the door open unless I was trying to contain the dog. Are you guys keeping the door closed to contain dogs or kids?
@Liberty44140 same the door is always open. I tell people who try to close it $50 to close the door. If your dumb enough to walk out there and fall off so be it.

Both, a one year old that’s starting to walk, a three year old that’s all over the place and a dog.

That is funny Renee! And yea Aero I get it. I hate when it’s closed, admiral closes it a lot for the barking dog on the dock and I just hate walking over it all the time..

As a matter of fact, that's exactly how the door is held in place on my 2000 FV270. The hinge side has an inner and outer sleeve with notches such that you lift and swing and the door can lock in place either swung in or out, or in the usual closed position. And they shaped the door so that even with the door shut the hatch "just" clears it. Only reason I can see Rinker ever changed it was because a simpler hinge and barrel bolt was cheaper.
I was wondering how you guys break these and I just worked it out - they go sideways. Mine drops into the floorso if by chance I don’t see mine closed when opening I have some leeway before it hits the door and causes damage to the hinge. Could you mount it at the bottom instead?
@icoultha , I’m not a pilot I’m a maintenance manager/technician, I should know better!! I just wanted to lift the hatch slightly to look in, barely 3 inches up and snap!! I always latch it because of our 3 year old. I need to come up with something... My 242 has a door that you had to lift up to swing and it dropped down to lock, would be perfect on this boat.
Ahh, I thought you were a flyboy. Easy enough to to forget the simple things at times. With the latch sideways you won’t get the 3”. Could you put it at the bottom?
I like the idea of the grommet though, I will have to look at that for mine.
