Anyone Using A Gatorback Belt?

picturethispicturethis Member Posts: 103 ✭✭
I have a 7.4 Merc that could use a new serp belt and thought a Gatorback belt would be be less noisey then the stock ribbed belt.   Has anyone used one in thier boat??

I am a new boater with my first boat,  thats why some of my questions seem dumb

    Not in my boat but my 7.3 excursion has one.  Will squeak with any other high dollar belt. Used to be good year, continental now.

    I strongly considered one for a Jeep that I had that would not stop squealing. Ended up being a bad clutch pulley. On my 342 a gates belt worked perfectly, zero noise.

    I did all idlers and tensioner.  Still squeaked with gates and Saudi belts

    Belt squeaking can come from a number of things:
    * loose
    * using ‘belt dressing’
    * contamination: oil, coolant, water, rust
    * worn belt
    * worn pulley(s)
    * bad idler
    * misalignment between pulley(s)

    You might be surprised of how off the pulleys can be to one another. Nobody is taking the effort to shim/align on an engine, not to mention the significant work it would take to do it. You just work with the tolerances given and deal with it. 😁
