Stereo Won't Power On

YYZRCYYZRC Member Posts: 4,907 ✭✭✭✭✭
OEM Clarion head unit won't power on.  Amp breaker is ok.  House battery on.

Any obvious things to check?

Some head units have a fuse on the back to check. What’s your voltage?

Will check that next time I'm at the boat.  I've got a new Clarion head unit to go in so hopefully it's something easy like that.  Got all the new speakers installed today.

On our 276 the original deck - Clarion M455 went bad. Would shut down & start/stop intermittently.
Replaced with a Clarion M303. Good after that.

@YYZRC , could it be wired to an accessory switch other then the key accessory position?

On my 330 the radio always had power. I assumed the same for the 350 but you might be right!

@YYZRC, my stereo only works if port key is in acc. position.

Seems like you guys have solved it. I didn’t try with the key on since the radio was always powered on my 330. Will try with the port key on.

I had 4 Bayliners before I got the Rinker.  They were all wired so stereos always had power, no need for key.  I assumed all boats were that way.  Was really bummed when the Rinker stereo only worked intermittently.  Learned on this site that it was wired like a car, with acc. on.  What a relief.

Thinking about this more, there are 4 terminals on the ignition switch and on the starboard side there was one terminal that was unused. On the port side all terminals had wires connected. I assume the accessories are wired to a separate terminal?

@YYZRC the pink wire on the port ignition switch was the power to stereo on my 03 310. Open tab on starboard switch is acc for that one just like you said

Is there a relay somewhere? If not, wouldn’t that mean that the radio is powered by the port starter battery and not the house battery? That doesn’t seem right...

Accessory power wire orange w green stripe.

Have you tried the starboard switch just-in-case? I finally figured out mine is powered via starboard acc even though each key switch is identical with wiring out the back.

On the 08 280 it seems like the orange with green stripe would be the power for head unit according to this drawing. Found this drawing somewhere on this site and saved it   Hope it helps

YYZ - you sure the deck isn't bad????
Those M455's were notorious for just blanking out. Rinker installed a lot of those decks back in 08.

Have you checked power at the back of the unit with a meter or test light?

I haven’t pulled the radio out yet. All the speaker cones had disintegrated; I’m guessing the previous owner wasn’t an audiophile.

My Rinker factory speakers got pretty crispy after just a few seasons as well.
Replaced all 8 + sub with Kicker Marine - worked really well.

    Now I'm a Fusion/JL Audio convert.

The radio was powered by the port key.

I found this relay buried in the breaker panel cabinet. I assume this isolates the radio so that it is on its own circuit as per the wiring diagram posted by @Pat310 - I think the light blue is the stereo remote illumination power.

I get the key powering the radio on a bow rider, but that makes no sense on a cruiser. Neither my 310 or my 342 had that, they were powered by the breaker on the panel. Wonder why Rinker went to this?

My '03 342 was wired to the ignition.  So was my '07 370 until I rewired it.  Power comes from a breaker, but the "remote on" circuit is wired to the ignition.

Interesting..... guess I was lucky. Never used those keys until we lit the fires and kicked the tires on both boats :)
