It is rare. As LR says they are slower and less efficient…. But they will handle chop and waves incredibly well compared to IO. Very comfortable ride. Just depends on what you are looking for, efficacy difference is 30% or more. I believe that all 420s are IB and 410 could be either with most being IO but I could have that backwards…
The 420 and 400 were IO’s. All of the 410’s were inboards. There were a few, very few, 342’s that had inboards. The IO version of that was faster and more efficient. Al posted about that and the article that was written a while back.

Yep, Greg nailed it. All 410s are inboards. all 400s & 420s are I/Os. I've been on my share of all 3 of them. The 410 engine room is really kind of strange with lots of space in weird areas (just not what you are typically used to with all the space in the aft area of the ER). Also, I believe all 410s had arches, not hard tops. We've had a couple 410s in our marina over the years (actually one was in my slip before I moved into it) and even have one that comes each year to Rinkervous. @patmel is the 410 that we see every year there!
The only exception I can think of would be @Dirtythirty 420 with volvo diesel with pods. Pods are an alternative to IO so that makes sense that all of the 420 were IO. Love the layouts of all of the 390, 400, 410, 420.... so much room up and down.
