You will need to locate the sender on top of your fuel tank. Remove the wire from the sender, turn on the ignition switch that controls the gauge and then touch the wire to the top of the tank. If the gauge goes to full deflection the problem is with the sender. If not it is the gauge or wiring.
I accidently kicked loose one of the wires on the tank when I was working on the generator on my 270. It was a simple fix to put the wire back on the clip and all was well.
Glad to hear it! The speedometer is probably a pitot tube speedo, which uses a little rubber tube at the top of the outdrive. The intake on the front of the drive is probably clogged with mud. Do a google search for "Clogged speedometer inlet hole" and you'll find videos about it.
