Access fuel sending unit to replace/remove?

How would I access the fuel sending unit on this fuel tank?  I have an issue on the fuel gauge and I haven't figured out if it's the gauge or the sending unit...but would like to figure out how to remove it if that ends up being the culprit.

Do people cut a hole in the "floor" to access it?

Forgive the mess...the boat has been in storage for a few years and this photo was taken mid clean up.

Yes, it looks like you'll have to cut out the edge of that floor.  Too bad -- but totally worth it to have a working fuel gauge.

I'd start by drilling 1/2" holes where you want the corners of the cutout.  Then use an oscillating multi-tool to make the cutout.  (Sharp corners will be weaker than rounded corners.)

Good idea with the multi tool.  I was thinking of a circular saw/hole saw with a similar diameter to the top of the sending unit.  But the multi tool would allow me to cut smaller pieces and "step up" to the smallest size possible.

The multi-tool is probably safer too ... looks like there isn't much clearance above the tank.
