Anchoring strategies

Say I want to anchor out for the night in a cove about 100 yards off of a large river with a current speed of about 1MPH. Am I ok with just a single anchor or would you advise something off of the stern, as well? Any anchoring tips are welcomed.

One anchor will be fine. Let out 7-10 times the depth of the water.

Pay attention to the wind direction and strength for overnight and morning and anchor accordingly. Light winds a single anchor and 5 to 7 times depth of rode should be fine.

Download this anchor drag app. It’s great!! Piece of mind when on the hook. ⚓️

Does the river have a lot of traffic with big wakes?  Some people prefer to anchor with the bow towards the wakes, held in place by a stern anchor.

However, if you're going to run the generator, it's always safest to use a single anchor so the bow faces into the wind (for proper ventilation of genny exhaust).

Totally agree about running the genny

There is regular barge traffic, light wind and I don't have a genny. So, you would feel secure with just the anchor off of the bow?

We anchored out for the first time last night and the waves didn't take a break and are still rolling 😟. Just had the bow anchor out and we have stayed put.
