Prop to hold the v-berth mattress for access to storage compartment

I improvised a way to hold up the mattress in the v-berth so I can use the storage compartment under the mattress.
The storage compartment is huge. To help with weight balance, I store heavy items there: spare shore power cords, tools and so forth. However, the mattress is heavy because it has a 3" memory foam topper. To use the storage compartment, I have to lift it up and basically hold it with my head while trying to reach into the storage compartment.
Warning: this solution is NOT pretty. I'm just testing it out to see if it works, and so far I like it. All I did was cut a length of 1"x4" pine. I lift up the mattress and shove the board in to hold it up. When I'm done, I just lay the board flat under the mattress. It's simple, and it works.
At some point, I'll come up with a solution that spreads out the load so I don't poke a hole in the mattress cover.
