I think I got ripped off

So I won’t go into all the detail but I had to have a long block installed on my 2006 FV 270 with a Volvo 5.7 GI. Everything costed me  more than I expected, but it is back running strong and it is what it is. The last straw was that they told me the alternator needed to be replaced, even though it was fine before the long block transplant. They charged me $569 for the alternator $73 freight and $105 to install it. Every alternator I see online is less than half that price. Ripped off again??

Sounds like it but maybe the peace of mind having everything new will be worth it. A few hours on the water should ease the pain!

Thanks Michael.  I do have peace of mind now when I go out.  Running great. I’m still breaking in the motor.

Sounds like oem list pricing to me. Some dealers  can't or won't use aftermarket parts...despite some aftermarket parts being an upgrade/better.

@PickleRick is probably right that they only use OEM.  But $73 for freight ... what did they do, helicopter air-drop it?!?

I got two API Marine alternators delivered to my door for $160 each.  So, yeah they charged you $500 more than an indy mechanic would have charged.  But they got it done, and that's something to be thankful for.

Time was of essence as the boating season in RI is only 5 months. Guess it was overnighted.

Just as the rest said it's OEM. Now just make sure they installed OEM

73 freight  sounds excessive unless they payed next day or maybe second day shipping.  Or two  shipping charges from another  warehouse or even factory to their distributor, then finally to the dealer.

Some of my vendors charge me extra freight to fulfill  backorder items from other regional  warehouses.

Most repair shops also make money on the parts. I think some shops shamelessly mark up the price, though. What do you consider to be a fair mark up percentage?

30 to 40 % on parts is about what we have to charge to make money on what we sell.  Keep in mind we sell much more 5 to 10 dollar parts for lawn equipment than a boat dealer.

Honda is the only look up i can see cost/msrp on marine parts.  I don't spend much time on that part of the in.honda network but the mark up is 30 to 50% from what I've seen.

But on a low cost part you must be using price escalators, right? A $0.25 cost bolt for $1.25 and no customer blinks.

Always keep in mind you can have it re built- I did that with mine and I think it was like 75 bucks? I did the pull obviously...
