Stinky Shower Sump Solutions?

I replaced the shower sump box at the start of the season. The box stinks up the whole head. I know it’s the box because I’ve popped the lid to check.

Do you folks flush the sump box out with something on a regular basis? I want to inundate it with bleach but worried about the pump seals etc.

  • Try white vinegar. Works great.

There should be a flapper valve (check valve) I think to help with the smell.

I run some hot water down the drain after the family is finished with showers so there is only fresh water in the box.

Use a cup of Pine-Sol it gives a nice fresh smell. I use lavender but there's a few different flavors. I wouldn't use bleach.

I make sure after using and wipe down to put a lot of fresh through.

This is interesting, we’ve never had a bad smell from the sumps on our boats. Maybe it has to do with how long the water sits? We take showers every evening on the boat so our boxes get a lot of refresh on the weekends.

I ran hot water thru mine today since it's been so long and I wanted to clean it out some and check the pump. The pump got stuck on and the shower box is leaking. That's why you always go over all your systems so there are hopefully no surprises later.

@Aqua_Aura , is it leaking or is it coming out of the vent? I never realized there’s a tiny vent on them.

That's the first I heard of a vent, I will check. Thanks

Ok, I've had it with the sump box.  The stink continues, and for the third time this season, the float/pump hasn't worked and filled my mid-bilge with shower runoff.

I'm switching to the Whale Gulper 220:

I will update once I install.

I have the Whale Gulper set up in a remote pump situation for my shower sump. Its the best setup I have seen. The pump works well and is very quiet.

do you install the whale pump  an inline or a sump box?

The one I ordered is inline. No more sump box. I will need to add a switch to turn it on/off.

Whale also makes one with an automatic switch at the drain but I don’t want to mess around trying to change the drain - way too tight down there.

Mine is inline. It has an electronic float switch in the shower sump that senses water level and turns the pump on. The pump is a diaphragm pump and the water pickup is within 1/8" of the bottom of the shower sump. The pump itself is  mounted in my engine compartment for easy access.
