ECU reset procedure

Hello,  I received an error code on my Mercruiser Mag 350.  I no longer have access to the diagnostic tool to reset the alarm code on my ECU.
Has anyone ever heard of the procedure of removing the negative and positive battery cables and holding them together for 15 seconds to reset the alarm code ??

I am wondering why you would risk potentially damaging the ECU by doing any of this.  If you resolved the issue the fault will be resolved and the beeping will stop.  It will just remain in the fault history.  If it is an active fault then it won't go away just from clearing it in the ECU.

If you turn off the battery switch it will clear the code. If the problem is still there the code will come back.
