Good news, bad news

TonyG13TonyG13 Member Posts: 1,288 ✭✭✭✭
Brought the boat to the yard for winter storage on Monday. Mentioned to the yard owner I had a little water coming in all season long. Just enough to kick in the bilge pump about once or twice a day and could he check it out.

Based on recent threads about rotten transoms I was getting nervous what he might find.

Went today and he told me it's coming from the fresh water tank.

So good news my hull/transom seems to be intact. Bad news, probably will need to pull the port engine to get a new tank in.

Is it a cracked tank, or a leaking fitting?

I had a loose coupling on the inline water filter right where it mounts on the water pump.
It would slowly drain the fresh water tank into the bilge over about 2 weeks. Took a long time to find the leak.
Finally found it when the pink was poured in the fresh water tank for winterizing.

    Hopefully just a fitting.

No details yet. He was in the middle of pulling boats out when I stopped to talk to him. Will get more info in a few days.

If it's the outlet fitting, can you reach it by unbolting the tank and tipping it up?  You could probably drill the fitting out and spin-weld a new one in its place.

The outlet elbow on my tank looks wimpy and fragile.  I can't believe it has survived 14 seasons plus a winter sitting on the ground under the boat during the reno.

I always thought under the v berth would be the best place to put  a water tank if doing a refit.   Keeps bow down at idle speed and on plane.  If you can fit it.

I was joking but also where would you install it? The hose would have to be hidden in a cabinet or something to make it down into the v berth. No small task.

I'd also move that to the bow.

Moving  50 lbs from the transom to the bow is like taking 80 to 100 lbs from the transom.

Especially important for us under powered boats.

My fresh water tank is under the salon floor.  Easy access, right next to ac pump and seacock. Perfect location!

50 pounds is only 6 gallons.

    Exactly.   Easily adjustable ballast.
