$700.00 for a power steering pump??

Have a leak right where the shaft goes into the pump, probably caused by the raw water pump leak that got salt everywhere via the belt it was dripping on. 

Why in the heck does a power steering pump for a boat cost 700 dollars... ? Anyone have an alternative?

Yes, a 50 dollar answer...it is a Saginaw std pump for a gm motor...if the can is OK. I bought one and installed with no issues and working fine. All the lines bolted up no issues. They even transferred the pully for me. Some have said something about a pressure valve being different but everything has been good. I'm sure I did a post about it...

I remember when mine went I bought a automotive pump but had to put it in the housing of the old pump Ill see if I can find the one I bought

I found via Ama-Bay perhaps 6 years ago a rebuilt that is still going strong for something like $60. Plenty of options out there @J3ff

https://rinkerboats.vanillacommunities.com/discussion/9808/power-steering-pump#latest is the link where I was chasing mine down...but did not have any part numbers...I took it down to the auto parts and found someone that does not need a computer to find a part ( rare these days ) but I think it listed is off an old GM pickup...probably still used today. This is an easy one Jeff! You can do it!!

So i tried the routes of just swapping the pump and ended up never getting it to seal properly.  So i just replaced mine again with this Amazon.com: UANOFCN Replace Sierra 18-7508 Mercury 16792A1 16792A33 16792A39 Marine Power Steering Pump : Automotive and also put on a new pulley Amazon.com: Engineered Marine Products MerCruiser Sea Water Pump Pulley Serpentine Belt- EMP Replaces 861579, 861578, 807731T : Sports & Outdoors.  Keep in mind what ever you do you are going to have to buy or borrow a tool to press on the pulley.

Phew. Thank god for you all.. It's leaking at the moment, but not very fast.. Going to look into the info here and buy some stuff tomorrow!! Thank you!!

The real weak link in the power steering system is the cooler which is on the back side of the motor. Never, Never touch it. It is all very thin copper and I swear if you touch it, it will leak.

I may get this stuff fixed and sell the boat. have been eyeing a regal outboard...
