Intermittent Depth Gauge readings

I noticed at the end of last season my depth gauge(oem lowrance) would be working and then start flashing as if it could not get a reading.  This happened while cruising and while on plane below 30mph. I look at this gauge constantly while underway. Is there any way for me to determine if it is the thru hull sensor or wiring?  Is there a way to test it out of the water?   Maybe it's just too old and needs replacement. Getting ready to fire it up for the the season next week but I need that gauge working.

@halifax212 I don’t think there’s much you can do except make sure the transducer face is clean.

I had that happen and was told that the fluid in the in hull transducer was leaking out. I’m still not sure if that was a real thing or the marine equivalent of “blinker fluid”. 

Ended up replacing it and all was well again.

@YYZRC  Thanks. I'll try cleaning the sensor first as per aero3113 , and if it still act up Ill order a fresh one right away.

Depending on your boat year, that Lowrance transducer/guage may no longer be available.  Of course the new ones are not backwards compatible either.  Been there!

@Black_Diamond   Sounds like new unit front to back is in order. Boat is an 04' and it doesn't have to be lowrance. As long as a new transducer fits the thru hull I will look at any brand. Only looking at half a boat buck

@halifax212  The thru hull diameter should be the same for newer units.
