my gen will start easily and only run for about 12 seconds. oil and coolant levels are fine .any thoughts  .thanks Terry

haven't had the boat long.I haven't changed the impeller but had it winterized tjis year at a dealer.

When it's running is there water coming out of the exhaust on the side of the boat? I think LOC is loss of coolant.

usually yes but not today.no water coming out.thought maybe because it didn't run long enough.

will a bad impeller cause the engine to shut down?

If no water is coming out it will shut down to prevent overheating

Yes, worn or damaged impeller = no water (LOC)

Be sure to have a new impeller, new o ring, and a box of Band-Aids. 

Might as well buy the service kit and change the anode, fuel filter and spark plugs at the same time.

I did plugs on mine last year and wow what a difference that made. Per the service interval I still had at least 50 hours left till replacement.

Confirm the diagnosis- did not even think about an impeller until it failed...one of the more easy repairs. I would also check tge anode- many threads on here about getting the air out of the coolant system...

As mentioned, easy fix.  It's either the impeller, clogged strainer, or you don't have the seacock open (or there is air in the strainer that needs primed).  Let us know what you find.

Like @Dream_Inn said, check the seacock first. There’s also a chance that the intake line needs to be primed.

If the seacock was closed…impeller is toast.  

Plugs: these eat them. Even if they look good!  I replaced annually and carried spares. 

Backwashing out impeller pieces is a bit of a pain if any vanes are missing. 

If you service the impeller, if you can turn the shaft by hand the coupler is broke.  Remove the fasteners around the plate the pump bolts to.  Do NOT unbolt the pump from the plate face.  The whole thing slides out, coupler slides on, pump shaft will slide on too once aligned. Rebolt the plate.

@Black_Diamond , when I first changed my impeller and coupler I unbolted everything and didn’t have any issues.

If you are careful…it can work.  Those couplings have poor misalignment capability and you can end up chewing up couplings or worse the bearing/seal in that pump.
