Emergency workaround for broken gear lube fitting

With a Bravo 3 outdrive, the gear lube reservoir has a hose to a plastic fitting on the transom.  My fitting broke this weekend, draining the gear lube into the bilge and disabling the engine.  My mechanic came up with an emergency workaround so good that I thought I'd share.
In this diagram, the fitting that broke is #6.  We were on Day 1 of our only boat trip this year, and I thought the boat would be disabled until we could get the part.  His solution:
1) remove the broken 90-degree fitting #6
2) relocate the reservoir #1 behind the trim pump, secured with zip ties
3) Connect fitting #8 directly to the transom assembly

It took him 30 minutes and we were safely back on the water.

lucky it was inside. I had the OUTSIDE ONE BREAK....drained all the oil into the water from the container, I jumped in and put a screw into the hose with a ziptie around it as tight as I could. Boat came out the next day and drained the drive three times.. only had a little bit of water in it thankfully as it was a BRAND NEW SEA CORE DRIVE!!

I couldn't sleep very well that night.
