Why did Mercury design and continue to use a terrible steering assembly that fails? One will never know. Lol
I keep saying to myself that a new transom assembly design will be coming out soon. Then I will feel MUCH better replacing mine. The current design has been in service for ever. A new design has to be in the works…🤷🏻♂️
Just make it so the pin is above the waterline, seems like an easy fix. Some geometry for the arms connected to the steering actuator and your good 🤷🏻♂️.
I’ve noticed on some boats with mercs that the transom assembly is out of the water enough to avoid the leaking pins. Maybe not as deep of a V in the hull?
Managed to chg the oil in both motors this morn. Only a single drop of oil hit the bilge. I've got a system down for swapping the oil filter. XL Ziplock bag, micro fiber cloths & quick hands. Lotsa blue shop towels.
Mercruiser has got the most convenient - yet worst design possible for a remote oil filter.
After making a mess of it my first year with the inverted oil filter, I find if I punch a hole in the center of the top and then punch another hole closer to the side of the top all I’m left with is a couple tablespoons of oil when I remove the filter. I do this right after warming up the engines then by the time I suck the oil out of the motor the filter is drained.
just pulled ours tonight and brought it home. Gonna go to auto zone this weekend to get the oil and filter then hope to get it all winterized next week. This summer has been a blur. Haven't had time for anything, including using the boat
I drained my drive last weekend. Had to wait on the yellow gaskets to fill it back up. Amazon delivered this week, so she gets winterized today. Water system is already done.

Got most of the stuff out of the cabin today and drained my fresh water tank and pressure washed the lower hull. Hoping to finish it this weekend but as has gone my summer, well I have a bowling tournament tomorrow then have to drop my truck off at the dealer tomorrow night then tonight noticed my wifes car brakes squealing bad, like real bad. And there is only about 15,000 miles on them. So not likely I will finish the boat this week but gonna try
......had remote filters on five boats with two being twins. Put a double plastic bag around the entire assembly, a couple of rags underneath, spun the filter off right into the bag. Some escaped oil would get on the rags and maybe, the odd time, a drop in the bilge. I loved the Merc remote filters - next best thing to a built-in electric oil extraction pump, which I had on the Rinker 190 with the 383 in it.
Always had the same mess with my Merc 305 & 350's. Punching a hole in them to let air in and oil drain absolutely helped, as did a bag and diaper of paper towels under the assembly. Interesting though, the oil and bypass oil filters on my Volvo diesels are also upside down and I can spin them off and not a drop spills. No punch hole or diaper needed, they drain themselves when the engine is not running.
@Liberty44140.....mine drained most of the oil too and imo what was left behind was easy to deal with. Now I did wear silicone gloves as a I change my oil when it's HOT.
Did my 496s the other day. Loosed filter first started suction on oil pump and after it was pumping i loosened it a bit. It was bone dry when i went to remove it no oil even in bottom of housing. Worked out great.

This is exactly what I do as well. I warm up my engines for a bit, then loosen the filters so that there is a small gap (for drainage) and then start the pump.
