What does this do?

Sorry for the stupid new boater question.

Port side stern has what looks like a hose hook up. Anyone know what this is for?

Looks like a fresh water hook up so you maintain a constant supply.

Yup.  hook a hose on it and it bypasses the fresh water tank.

If you use this, take the precaution of turning off the water at the dock when you leave the boat, a leak can sink the boat.

I always shut off my "fresh water pump" when hooked up to the shore water....

Yes, I keep mine on all the time while I am on the boat and not connected to shore water. I do turn it off when we are not on the boat because I personally know someone's boat that caught on fire because of the pump.

That connection is Called "City Water Connection". I use mine all the time, saves filling a water tank that will go bad in no time unless you chlorate with bleach. It also saves wear and tear on the water pump.... it's much quieter in the boat at night if someone uses the water. Always turn your city water off when not at the boat.

There was a long and interesting thread about potable water tanks and sanitizing.  personally, I use my tank all the time for drinking/shower, etc.  probably 1 tank a week, so it stays 'fresh'

yep, here we go again.  I use mine all the time as well BD!  When I do connect to city water, I turn it off even at night (wouldn't want to sink in the midle of the night with me in it either).
