Long story short, this seal behind the water pump...took it off, which way does it go back on! I can't see any imprint on the pump side or the gunny side- hard to imagine it does not matter?
@rasbury here’s another pic I have of it, sorry it’s not brighter to see. If you zoom in, does that help at all? Maybe you can edit and lighten it up to see better.
Thanks @aero3113...I could not save the picture to edit it- but this seal design is relatively universal it seems. The surface of the side that is protruded is hard and highly finished goes on the shaft first or towards the geny as there is another mating part (serviceable) pressed into that side of the geny.
The shiny portion goes toward the genny. the other side I believe has a seal on it. That seal keeps the impeller side (which has water) from leaking out. I replaced this entire unit on my genny last year because that seal was leaking all of that was rusted out.
That entire pump part number is Seawater Pump | Kohler GM28487
Thanks @Dream_Inn...mine is good...it is kind of amazing to me these ceramic surfaces with no lubrication foes not go up in smoke! It is a common design....
