Rusted elbow bolts

TickledPinkTickledPink Member Posts: 117 ✭✭
I'm replacing the exhaust manifolds, risers, elbows etc. on my 5.0L MPI and am stuck before I start. The elbow bolts on the top are all rusted shut and only one will turn.
Any tips for loosening them would be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much.

Are you just using a wrench or ratchet? Try using an impact gun. You need the shock to loosen up the bolt. My impact gun is my favorite tool. It helped me tremendously with my FJ40 when I was pulling it apart. You have a good chance of snapping the bolt if you don’t use one.

Harbor freight has some reasonable ones that work really well, compact also. I have their Bauer impact gun.

Find your favorite penetrating fluid and let it soak a few days.

Start the boat up and let it get to normal running temp, or as close as possible.

Try to pop them while warm.

Good luck....always a slim chance of breaking the the head off the bolt
