Is this the end of the road with me and this 270??

After spending months of weekends fixing things, replacing things... here is where we are at.

In June I started getting high temps while on plane.. as soon as I slowed down temp would come right back to normal.. as far as vessel view was concerned it never got over 190.

I went through the entire raw water system, found the impeller in pieces, found the pieces, flushed everything, replaced the cool fuel 2 pipe, got it all back together. Also flushed the heat exchanger, changed the raw water impeller.  I have replaced both risers and both port and starboard gaskets. I have a 3 inch spacer on both sides. You replace both the manifold side and riser side of the gasket when doing this job.

My port side does not leak at all.

2 weeks ago I thought I was done, then this happened on the STBD side riser/spacer/manifold.

I thought "okay, you screwed something up" I tasted it, seemed to be fresh water, not coolant. (I could be very wrong on that though) Took it apart, didn't see anything too crazy but the gasket that was installed on the spacer to riser connection that blocks the engine coolant from mixing with the raw water did appear crushed in a weird way.

Two new gaskets, being more careful this time.. ready to get the boat back in the water today and here we go again. This time it's not fresh water, it's coolant!!!

What in the ****. I guess this points to me messing up installing it again. Meanwhile the PORT side is not showing any leaks at all. This is the third time since owning this boat I've replaced the risers on my own.

One thing I am not understanding.. why is water coming out of a bolt hole? Can't find anywhere that shows where the actual water jackets are.

So done with I/O's. I've looked into an outboard conversion in Miami. I can't spend 30k on this boat.

A long time ago I replaced risers and elbows on a regal I owned. It had a leak at one of the bolt holes. Turned out there was a bad casting in the elbow.

What did you torque the bolts to? I think they’re 45 ft lbs. go up to 50 ft lbs. did you tighten in a cross pattern?

Did you install the correct gasket?

The ones I have always used have both holes open for the spacer to the manifold...is this not correct?  and then yes, the completely closed holes for the spacer to the riser.

Everywhere I looked has said 33. I did take it to 35 but didn't want to break anything. Of course now that I google 45 A.i. is saying

"Cast Iron Risers/Manifolds: 30 to 33 ft-lbs (some larger or specific V8/dry-joint setups range up to 35–45 ft-lbs depending on the exact manual and fastener size)."

so I took it to 35 but def not 45.

Doesn't seem to have an option for if you have a spacer in play. Which would make me think we have been using the correct gaskets.

The EPC says block off gasket with closed cooling but you installed an open gasket? Did you install open gaskets on both sides of the riser extension?

3" riser extension for a 6.2L with closed cooling (not sure if its the same for your motor)

Riser extension kit has 2 block off and 2 full flow gaskets:

When I just installed mine, I saw 40, ran it and saw a leak. Researched again then saw 45 was the number. Still had a leak abd brought it up to 50, leak gone.

Where was it leaking from? The most confusing thing about it is how it's leaking from a bolt hole.

Here are some pics after I took it apart carefully - you can see where it was leaking here, doesn't really show where the water is coming from.

Unless it does and I'm not seeing it. I suppose if it's not torqued down enough coolant could be coming out of that rear  hole (right top is stern of the boat)  and getting in between the gasket? maybe that's why there's all this rust around it..

What’s this? Looks like a casting defect or corroded through?

Yeah, I emailed the company I bought it from asking if this was normal. Funny enough I have another Riser just sitting around as a spare, so I'm going to use that one.  Hopefully I can send this one back.
