I have 2 iCom hand helds. Look for waterproof...floating is a bonus too.

5 mile range is good. Not sure if I get that with my iCom. But the iCom hasn't given me problems in 2 years.

Do they have DSC with built in GPS in handhelds yet? That would be good to have.

I have had an Icom for a few years and been very happy with it.  Bought it as a backup & to use with my dinghy.  I end up using it more than my primary one.  You can get about any option you want in a handheld nowadays.

I'm with Al...I've had a Raymarine for over 10 years and never had an issue. Still working on the original batteries.
