2008 Rinker 280 EC

<img src="null" />just joined forum.  I'm looking to step up to a cruiser, and serious about buying this Rinker.  Some hold backs-- not sure about single engine Volvo 8.1 ?  Enough power?  good motor?

I'm trading in my 2001 Four Winns cuddy cabin, i'm in a slip at lake mead and just want to make sure i'm making the right choice.  There are a few cosmetic items that need fixing the cockpit storage door where the hinge brook off the corian top.

I have to believe that 8.1 is plenty. The real question is which Volvo outdrive does it have?

8.1s will offer plenty of power. What else is on it, genset? Aircon?

Hi Glenn,

We have a 2007 280 same set up as you, 8.1 is plenty with 40+ max speed and loads of torque for a fast on plane time. Check the drive as ours failed last year and was replaced with OceanX. Apart from that great boat!

not sure what outdrive comes standard with the Volvo Penta 8.1.  How pricey was the OceanX drive?

I think the choices were the DP, XDP and the new OceanX.  I believe the XDP is the disaster outdrive; look it up, plenty of talk about this and a few guys on here know first hand the $$$ pains.  I'm sure you are in the multi-thousand dollar tag to replace the XDP.

Side bar question, is the DP-SM drive okay?  (fingers crossed)

The OceanX drive on ours was $18k plus installation, approx $3k. The previous owner had it placed last year as the XDP had a catastrophic failure.

dang Richard, I did not spend much more than that for my 270, yikes! I did pass on a boat that had the XDP drive on advice from this site....have the bravo III with the 350....would not have minded having the bigger motor as it does take a little to plane out, certainly more than my 20 bow rider did!

Yes I was quite shocked when I saw the invoice for the OceanX, glad I didn't have to pay for that one! what did you end up buying?

Follow up on the outdrive.  It's a Volvo 8.1 with a DPS-A drive--NOT XPS.    Hope the DPS-A is a good one?
