280 Grill location

Cableguy GregCableguy Greg Member Posts: 5,025 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is there anyone with a 280 or newer 290 that has mounted a Magma grill to the swim platform? I just got the Newport grill with the pedestal mount. I have seen them mounted on the starboard side and I have seen a picture of one mounted where the swim ladder is located. If I go the swim ladder location, I won't have the base exposed anywhere, but the grill would be in the way of the walk thru. The base is only 5/8" thick, so I can't see it being a trip hazard. The other option is to return the pole mount and put a fishing rod holder behind the rear seat. I am not to sure I want a hot grill that close to the seats... Any thoughts???

There was a post awhile ago about different positions. I have the same issue with my 290 I just can't find a spot that works for me

We use a rod holder mount for our magma and have no problems. I have used the one right behind the seats as well. My kids are usually swimming/ jumping when we use ours, so the platform would put it in the way for us.

Swim platform on a pedestal mount, opposite side of the transom door and swim ladder.

I know I am alone on this but I would never ever grill on my boat. There is a gas vent on each side of the boat. People coming off and on boat while boat is rocking from waves or wake. IMO just not safe.....

I bought an electric grill last year, not as powerful as propane, but no flame.  I usually bbq on the dock not on the boat itself though.

Do you want it specifically to use on the water or on dock? If on water I would consider the rod holder option. I located mine on the gunwale next to the aft entrance, away from the seat.

I want to use it out on the water more than the dock. I have a portable Coleman grill, but there isn't anywhere to really set it up for grilling. That is why I was thinking the Magma with the pole on the swim platform.

I have a mount on our rear handrail that works out fine on a 270. I'll post a pic when I get a chance. The rod holder would certainly be a versatile choice especially if you have a nice selection of rod placements like Mark. Fish laugh at my half hearted attempts so rod holders on the Tikihut are limited to one that's' really just for show. :D

I don't know how big Rays friends are to cause his big ol' 342 to rock so wildly that food would fly off his grill but it sounds like a heII of a blast. Wahoo lets get that grillin' started. :D

I have a 280 and it is mounted on the starboard side of swim platform.  I find it comfortable enough and does not interrupt the swimmers getting out of the water.

my 270 sounds set up a little different as the walk through is opposite the swim platform so I was concerned as well....ended up putting it over by the walk through, there is plenty of room to get by it and that's were it is. Used it last weekend for the first time and it was great!

It is set up a little different. Your ladder is opposite the walk through. My ladder is directly behind the walk through. I think I am going to go with the starboard side. Like seguir stated, on that side of the 280 it won't interrupt the swimmers. I hope to get the grill installed tomorrow and use it on the 4th.

Ras could you send a pic I'm thinking that is where I'm putting mine on our 290 just can't visualize it

My boat is off to the storage lot...I'm thinking of bringing it home this weekend to do some cleaning...As soon as I have access to it, I will post!

  • rasburyrasbury Member Posts: 8,392 ✭✭✭✭✭

I put it as far out in the corner of the platform as I could- the stove you can angle 45 degrees and there is plenty of room to get around it...but will post the pic!

I settled on the starboard side of the platform. I placed it close to the front in the corner. I also angled the grill, which makes grilling rather easy. I will post some pictures later. I got to use it on the 4th and it worked great!

Here is mine, completely out of the way, swim ladder and transom door are on the opposite side.  Kids can still get in and out of the water while I grill.

great position ... accessible grill with mount hardware out of primary area of use.

    Great job guys.

I use the rod holder mount for my grill and I've never had an issue.

1 rule of thumb for grilling on the boat is no burgers...to much grease and flame.

    chicken,shrimp and steak...it's what's for dinner!

I have two locations for my grill:

    1) on my Scotty rod holder at the back of the boat, for when I'm on the water:

    2) on my rub rail so I can BBQ while on the dock (in the black cover) - nice and easy access:

What model of the Magma Grill did you use?
I have a 312, wanting to mount on the swim platform.

Mine is the Newport model with folding legs. The legs work out well when cooking on a table on shore.
