    I'd have it rechecked/changed with Merc spec oil if the drive was recently replaced. Brown doesn't sound right. make sure they drain/refill the reservoir too.

    I stopped at the shop that replaced my stern drive and they assured me that they replaced with new oil.
    I went to the boat to top off the reservoir and must admit that the oil is not discolored...ONCE I TOOK THE CAP OFF! It looked dark when I was just looking at the reservoir.
    Put in about 8 ounces and all is well....so far. I bought another quart at 22 bucks to keep on board for subsequent top off's.
