100% with LDM and others. I built houses for years. NEVER sandwich a carpet between moisture and a covering and I'm not even thinking of damage to the new surface. An enclosed carpet will be a source of mould and mildew. Anyone surveying that boat in the future could condemn it. Leaving that carpet in would be asking for SERIOUS trouble. MT
Plywood is behind the steps. I removed the carpet and added a board that match the steps. I used White Oak for the steps and stained to match the cabinets. White Oak is a very hard wood like Teak that wont absorb water as easy as some woods. Notice the step up under the table. I used plasTeak cost more but is designed for boating. http://www.plasteak.com/
SO here is a crude sketch of the layout under the aft berth where the A/C pump/strainer and toilet inlets are and the adjacent shower sump. Any water that would leaking in the A/C pump area drains into the section with the shower sump...but it has no where to go, no drain hole to the mid bilge. Where is the drain hole in yours?
